How much do you know about the following common ingredients used in many household cleaning & personal care products?
Petrochemicals: Petroleum based chemicals that transmit into Xeno-extrogens. These unnatural estrogens are absorbed by the skin and can affect hormone balance and respiratory systems.
Caustics: Irritate skin and are still used in most soaps to break down tallow (animal fat).
Xeno-extrogens: Xeno (foreign, alien, unnatural) estrogens are transmitted to animals and humans by way of petrochemicals and are easily absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream> petrochemicals are common ingredients in most household cleaning products.
DEA Diethanolamine: is used as a lathering agent in shampoos, body cleansers etc. and is a skin & eye irritant.
Diazolidinyl Urea: Is a formaldehyde releasing agent often used in personal and baby care products.
Glycol: Dangerous petrochemical used in many cosmatic preparations and as an anti freeze in motor vehicles. no value to the skin, this ingredient is included to ensure that the cream or lotion glides easily on the skin.
Chlorine: (most commonly known as bleach) destroys the living organisms (bacteria) required to biodegrade. Harmful to the respiratory system The World Health organisation has called for a phase out and ban on chlorine in domestic products worldwide.
DMDM Hydantoin: Is a formaldehyde releasing agent.
Formaldeyde: The chemical name is Formalin and this is often printed on the labels. Used as a preservative in shampoos, baby washes, mascara, creams, bubble baths, anti-dandruff shampoos and some deoderants. A common ingredient in fabric softeners and is used in glue preparations for carpets, panel boards and melamine. It is known to cause eye, nose and throat irriatation, coughing, asthma attacks, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, nose bleeds, headaches, dizziness and is a suspected human carcinogen. It is also known to cause serious weakening of the immune system. be sure to open windows and doors for airflow and avoid products containing this toxic ingredient.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate: A common ingredient used in shampoos, soap replacements, body washes and bubble bath, toothpaste and cosmetic cleansers. Side effects may cause improper eye development in children and is a skin irritant. The thickening agent Sodium Chloride (common salt) is harmful to hair and the scalp causing dryness, itching and in some cases hair loss.
Phosphates: are used in fertilisers and many laundry products. The problem in some waterways in Australia is an excess of Phosphates leaching into the waterways, which then cause excessive amounts of algal growth, known as eutrophication. While most of the problem does come from agricultural use we do not have to add to the problem by using phosphates in our cleaning products in the home.
Flouride: An ingredient often used in toothpaste, it is a poison to humans when ingested over long periods as it accumulates in body tissues. The growing scientific consensus is that flouride provides no benefit to teeth but does cause damage to the bones and organs in the body.
